Rotaria: Philodinidae: Philodinida: - n.s. -: Bdelloidea: Eurotatoria
Taxonomic / nomenclatural notes:
• not Vorticella macroura Hermann (Rotifer macrourus (Hermann) Schrank) [species inquirenda].
• As Segers (2007:90) [Ref.16970] points out, "there is considerable confusion in literature regarding the identity and synonymy of Rotaria macrura (Ehrenberg) and Vorticella macroura Hermann, 1783 (Rotifer macrourus: Schrank, 1803). The exact taxonomic identity of the latter can’t be inferred from the original description; however, it is clear that the two are not conspecific (Harring, 1913). I therefore follow Harring (1913) rather than Donner (1965), who lists Vorticella macroura Hermann as synonym of Rotaria macrura (Schrank)."
• it shall be noted, that Schrank (1803) [Ref.16657] did not establish the name Rotifer macrourus separately, but only combined Vorticella macroura Hermann with (masculine) genus name Rotifer. It is not nomenclaturally available as "Rotifer macrourus Schrank, 1803", as often cited in the literature. "Schrank's name", Rotifer macrurus Schrank entered literature only later through Ehrenberg's (1832) [Ref.17210] misspelling of Hermann's original epithet. That the animal observed by Ehrenberg has nothing to do with the one figured by Hermann is evident from Ehrenberg's (1838) [Ref.15546] description. To acknowledge this, Harring (1913:92) [Ref.17237] accepts Rotaria macrura (Ehrenberg) as the valid name and considers the insufficiently described ?Vorticella macroura Hermann (?Rotifer macrourus (Hermann) Schrank) as possibly synoynymous with Rotaria neptunia (Ehrenberg).
