Brachionus: Brachionidae: Ploima: Pseudotrocha: Monogononta: Eurotatoria
Taxonomic / nomenclatural notes:
• not B. caudatus after Daday (1905) [Ref.17113] [=Brachionus austrogenitus Ahlstrom?]
• the animal figured by Daday (op. cit.) as B. caudatus Barrois & Daday closely resembles B. austrogenitus Ahlstrom, but deviates by possessing two small spines next to the bases of the posterior spines. This, as already pointed out by Ahlstrom (1940) [Ref.16985], are "so unusual a feature that one is led to doubt the accuracy of the observation". It is therefore tentatively included here as B. austrogenitus.
• B. caudatus is a highly variable morphospecies with cosmopolitan distribution. It currently includes a multitude of infraspecific taxa, but these probably represent a complex of cryptic species with narrower geographic ranges and/or ecological tolerances.
