Description: A partly collapsed karst cave (referred to as ‘‘Vai’’ for ‘‘freshwater’’) formed by freshwater runoff from the basaltic volcanic cone that is collected at the inner cliff of an old fringingreef surface that has been exposed through tectonic uplift (Makatea). The water is slightly brackish due to saltwater intrusions.
